Comic books have experienced a massive change since they were first introduced with historians now separating the timeline into different eras.

The first comic book to be published was The Adventures of Mr. Obadiah Oldbuck in 1842; becoming known as the first known American ‘proto-comic’. Yet, many historians cite Famous Funnies: A Carnival of Comics as the first American comic book as we know them now. This was back when comics were centred around humour and comedy opposed to heroes and ongoing stories.

1938 saw the introduction of Superman and the start of the Golden Age of Comics. Due to the popularity of this character, comics about heroes and villains became far more common place. It’s no surprise that Superman is also the most popular comic book with over 600 million copies being sold since its debut in 1938.

The Silver Age of Comics came around in 1956 with the Flash, reviving the superhero archetype and sales for the genre. Marvel revolutionized comics throughout this period with artists and writers such as Stan Lee, Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby. The Silver Age brought modern favourites like the Fantastic Four and Spider-Man.

The line between when the Silver Age stopped and the Bronze Age is a little blurred. Most people agree that it began in the early 1970s and ran through until the mid 1980s, when the Modern Age begun.

The longest running comic series of all time is DC’s Action Comics -  Superman’s base comic book. Though, Detective Comics and the Adventure of Superman are not far behind. Marvel’s longest running comic is Fantastic Four with the Avengers taking second place.

Comic books are only going to get better and better as technology develops. Now, you can keep all of your comic books on one device opposed to having them taking up room in your house. Obviously, if you’re a keen collector then you’ll want to hold on to the hard copies. Yet, for the average reader Kindle’s and other reading devices make reading comics a whole lot easier.

In fact, the whole superhero industry has boomed since the characters entered the big screen and reading became more accessible. Now that people collect vintage comics and the franchise has become more popular, merchandise has sky rocketed. Comic-related posters are now one of the most popular types of posters being sold.
